I have never cooked pork before.  Let me rephrase that.  I have cooked the bacon form of pork, but other than that, I have never cooked pork.  We don’t eat a whole lot of pork around here, but have a freezer and ½ full of it.  It is a long boring story on why we have this, but the bottom line is – freezer full of pork, we never eat it, its still there.

Last week I decided I would bite the bullet and attempt cooking it.  I don’t really…like, the flavor of pork.  Maybe its from not eating it much, just not being used to it, or simply not appreciating the pork-y flavor – Im just not a fan.  But I was determined.  But since I have never cooked it – I had NO idea what to do with it, all I knew was that I wanted to flavor it so I didn’t have to taste the pork.  I decided to marinate it, thinking it was my best option to mask the flavor.

The only problem is – most of the recipes I found called for soy sauce and thanks to an ordering error, we havent had any soy sauce for a long time.  As a side note – that is pretty much the main ingredient for everything I cook, so cooking has been a stretch for me lately.  But back on topic.  I found two or three that looked interesting, cut and pasted the main ingredients, printed my list out and went to play with my 3 boneless pork chops.

I didn’t measure anything, I just dumped and stirred and guessed and freaked out.  It was vinegar based, I guess you could say since I went a little pour happy with the vinegar.  Followed by some onion, garlic, hot sauce, chili powder, salt, pepper, brown sugar, ginger, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice.  I went a little heavy on the brown sugar because I didn’t want it to taste completely sour, but I have to say the lemon juice was probably the best addition.

Then I lay the chops in a pan, put two slits in the tops of them, and stuffed some garlic in there for extra flavor.  Poured the marinade over the top and let them sit in the fridge for a few hours before sticking the pan straight from the fridge into the oven.

I cant say the pork flavor was COMPLETELY masked, but it was enough so that I ate my entire chop.  Which wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t atleast decent tasting.  No one complained, but they rarely do, so I really cant go off of that.  Ha.

Tangy, spicy and slightly sweet would be words I would use to describe it.

Either way, I would say it was a fairly successful first attempt at pork, and possibly good enough for a repeat.

And best of all?  It was easy.  I almost felt bad that it was dinner, since I couldn’t have asked for an easier meal.

1-2 cups vinegar
½ cup Lemon Juice
½ cup brown sugar
1 Tablespoon Chili powder
½ Onion, chopped small
Hot sauce, a few splashes
Worcestershire
Garlic, crushed
Ginger, either fresh or powder
Salt
Pepper

Mix well, pour over pork chops.

Outside flowers are a little difficult to come by this time of year, but I had noticed a pretty pink rose in our garden earlier this week, and knew I wanted to take advantage of it for these weeks challenge.  But as the days wore on, the rain wouldnt let up, and fearing that the heavy winds would take off with my only flower for the week – I decided to brave the rain.

Thing is, Nik doesnt like the rain, and so after a few blurry shots, he stopped shooting altogether, forcing me into the house to grab a towel and umbrella and try again.  Umbrellas dont work here, with the winds, they more or less go all cartoon style stupid.  But there I was, bend over a thorn infested rose bush in the pouring rain with my camera and an umbrella who preferred to be inside out.  Which of course is when all the neighbors decided to drive on by.

Im sure by now they dont even bother to question what I am up to 🙂

Either way, this is what I came up with:

Most call these weeds, I called it “perfect!”:

Clovers:

I had a hard time narrowing these down:

Then we had a bit of sun, so I decided to retry the roses one last time:

But I kind of liked the ones in the rain better!

Amanda also had a picture to add this week, some Pansy’s from England!:

And then this cute little star shaped flower:

I thought it looked really neat with the light behind it.  Thanks Capn 🙂

This week was kind of difficult, while I really wanted to push myself out there and get some different kind of pictures, I stumbled on someones professional photography site, and instead of being inspired, I was jealous.  It was all downhill from there.  The leaves started falling, it started getting darker earlier, the green started turning yellow and well…it was just that kind of week.  Nothing particularly bad, except my attitude.  But yesterday when I took Yoshi for a walk, I decided to bring Nik along too…

There is no shortage of green here, even in the bleak winter months there are still the trees…

Crazy to think just a few weeks ago these had bright pink flowers on them:

Baby trees:

Green day:

Yoshi and I took off running through a field of misc weeds, I was trying to get a picture of a cruise ship going through the channel.  On our way back to the road I stopped to see if I could find a 4 leaf clover.  Believe it or not I have never seen one before.  I guess they do exist:

Good-bye leaves:

Until we meet again next year.

I then asked Amanda if she had any “Green” pictures from the week.  She jumped all over it with a statement that was similar to “I do!  I think I might actually maybe have some!” and then a picture of a chicken came over.  Green eggs maybe?  It seemed a bit of a stretch, so I asked her if she had any GREEN pictures.  She was silent and then another chicken came over.  Obviously we werent communicating well – and then she sent me a picture of her tomato plants.

Atleast they are green!  🙂

Pretty much true to my word, I didnt take my camera out a single time this week.  In my defense the weather has been crummy all week and taking him on walks in the rain just isnt that much fun unless there is something Im hoping to get.  Sunday turned out to be a beautiful 70 degree weather day.  I know that doesnt sound like much but here 70 is just awesome.

Yoshi was begging to go out and play and I just couldnt say no.  So Nik and I followed her around playing with ropes and bubbles.

I was blowing bubbles and snapping pictures at the same time – coordinated I am not – a lot of the pictures were of the ground etc.  Much like last time

, but this little bubble happened to make a nice picture I thought:

She wanted to play SO bad but didnt have her toys outside…she played with her rope that she was tied up to instead:

A play mate!!

Finally got her toy rope…

…and someone to play tug-o-war with her.

Then it was back to chasing bubbles…

…and making funny faces in them.

And then the dreaded time of day…going in from a hard day of play…

Good-bye Summer sun!
