This past week has been so full!!  It seems that after a lull, everyone is calling us back to do some babysitting.  Which isnt a bad thing, its kind of fun.

About two weeks or so ago we watched three little boys.  A few days later we watched three other kids.  Saturday night we watched the same three little boys again, and today we had two little brothers and Parker…!

We decided to make Christmas cookies, seeings that we havent done that yet…

The only problem was Parker isnt really used to sharing.  Hes an only child, and while he goes to school, when he is here, he isnt used to having to share us.  He was a little confused I think.  The older brother was also sort of confused, because Parker was older, so they were bother trying to out do each other.  Meaning Parker was building a fort – the other kid wanted to wreck it.

The littlest one was the only one that stuck with cookie making from start to finish, that kind of surprised me.  They were all pumped about making cookies, but only followed through with one or two.

After we frosted them all, we set out to deliver, or “Share” them with neighbors.  A few friends.  One person wasnt home, and after an accidental “No we dont go in peoples houses when they arent home” we set off for the other house – that was in the opposite direction.  Thankfully we had the help of a wagon for that round.  The second house the kids let themselves in and took their shoes off, making themselves at home.  Wooops!

We got home just in time for a nap, and then parents started showing up.

And now, its time for the second cup of coffee for the day!

Parker and the younger brother:

Older brother, stirring red, I believe this was just before frosting started to fly:

Making blue:

“I can eat this, right?”:

The little guy was so full of personality…too cute:

And there you have it.  This years Christmas cookie making adventure.  Not quite as big and full as last years, but fun none the less.  Also?  Parker hasnt gotten any bigger, has he.  No, he hasnt.  I cant HEAR you!

How long have I been in this storm?
So overwhelmed by the ocean’s shapeless form
Water’s getting harder to tread
With these waves crashing over my head

If I could just see you
Everything would be all right
If I’d see you
This darkness would turn to light

And I will walk on water
And you will catch me if I fall
And I will get lost into your eyes
I know everything will be alright
I know everything is alright

I know you didn’t bring me out here to drown
So why am I ten feet under and upside down
Barely surviving has become my purpose
Because I’m so used to living underneath the surface

If I could just see you
Everything would be all right
If i’d see you
This darkness would turn to light

And I will walk on water
And you will catch me if I fall
And I will get lost into your eyes
I know everything will be alright
And I will walk on water
And you will catch me if I fall
And I will get lost into your eyes
I know everything will be alright
I know everything is alright

Everything’s alright
Everything’s alright

I cant remember if I told this story before or not, but here it goes again.

A few years ago – I was poking around online, when I ran across an add that said “Christmas Village” free to good home. Now, ever since as long back as I can remember, we have been in love with these villages. The little train tracks, trains, people and tiny trees. It was a little girls heaven, and once, when we went to visit a great aunt, she let us set the trees up. I remember walking down the aisles of Christmas Villages with our mom, taking in the beauty (and of course, prices) of them. So when I saw the add, I jumped it. We made a phone call, and arranged to go pick up our very own Christmas Village.

Later that night we drove 11 miles – only to discover, the Christmas Villages weren’t what we were thinking. Somewhere in the communication it was lost that these houses, villages, were hand painted, handcrafted by the owner, meaning more to her than anyone really. Infact, It didn’t mean anything to us when she said that “School was painted by little Billy in the 2nd grade” and so forth.

She led us into her old abandon house, explaining that they just had a new house built, a much smaller house, and that she couldn’t take all of her Christmas stuff with her. She said she tried to have a garage sale, but no one wanted anything. The house was falling apart, leaning terribly to one side, with pieces of plywood covering big gaps. It was cold, dark, wet, and clammy. “But wait!” she said “You first must see the rest of the house – and take all of this stuff with you too!” She led us through the house, her and her older son, with only a small light.

The room – was FILLED with nutcrackers. Big ones, small ones, medium ones. Bigger ones, smaller ones, smaller than small ones, and bigger than big ones. Fat ones, skinny ones, tall ones short ones, and well, you get the idea. The house was literally LOADED with nutcrackers.

She led us to another room “And you must take Tiny Timmy and his father!” she exclaimed, as her son held up a three foot tall doll that swung back and forth when plugged in.  Tiny Timmy you see, was abandon by his parents, and this person holding him was not his father, but a kind hearted gentleman folk come to rescue Timmy for the holiday season.  At this point we started to be a little overwhelmed. We had come to get something there apparently wasn’t, and we were leaving with more junk than we really needed.

But somehow, we felt bad for her. Her house was going to be crushed, and with it all of her prize possessions. What could we do?

We loaded the van, and made numerous trips over the next few days. Boxes, and piles, and boxes and MORE boxes. Of nutcrackers, painted houses, tiny Timmy and his father, and that old “Spice bear that was hand packed with hand picked spices, FRESH! Every year!” that smelled of mildew and weighed atleast 20 pounds. There were lights, and bells, and whistles, and of course, Little Billy’s third Christmas lights from his third Christmas! She could bear to see those get smashed with the house, but had no room in her new house! Could we take it? And care for it? And love it till death do we part? In went the lights. More nutcrackers, and more junk.

So much stuff. Broken pieces of plastic figurines filled the living room, and soon we were tripping over the dancing bunny and Tiny Timmy and his father. There were the Christmas Carolers, and nutcrackers…more of them.

Eventually, dad got tired of seeing a wise-man stare at him every night and the few select pieces of the nativity scene that stood three feet tall, with missing pieces, were sent to the garage, the boxes of nutcrackers were stuffed in the attic along with the spice bear and his friends, and the villages were banished to the other attic. A few boxes of lights were strung on the tree that year, and the rest were lost among the garlands and other objects.

But the nutcrackers, for some reason, have never been lost. We still have the boxes of them upstairs in our attic, the back one, to be exact. You open a box, and you will see, hundreds of little men laying in a box, showing off their purely whites and chins that move when you pull on the wooden lever in their back. Their white beards that have turned colors with age, and hats that have broken off. Fat little men sit in their respective boxes, all but forgotten, but still smiling, while the mouse king and his kin sit in the box next door.

Which leaves us with a few questions and maybe one or two conclusions. And definitely a lesson.

Who came up with the name…nutcracker? Why are they still in our attic? And finally – never, ever, EVER, respond to an add that say “Free Christmas Villages” they arent free, and they arent empty. Those villages are occupied by hundreds, if not thousands of tiny men. And of course, Tiny Timmy and his “Father”, who we just cannot bear to banish to anywhere but the garage.

With of course, the giant, dancing bunnies…

I couldn’t honestly tell you why, but I am in a bit of a panic at the moment.  My mind is racing, and I cant slow it down.  I cant focus long enough on one task to get it completed without wanting to move onto the next.  Its almost as if I feel that “Putting myself” on one task, frees me from the situation, and I can move onto another task, while that one is still getting done.  Except that’s not how it works.  All I want for Christmas is a clone of me.  Actually wait, no I don’t.

I have so many many scattered thoughts, and things I want to share, but much like my life, I cant focus long enough to say one thing!

Scatterbrained!

First off – I need help!!!  Im suppose to be shooting pictures of Amandas Wedding in January…and…I don’t have ONE CLUE what I should expect or do, except that maybe I will pass out, or forget to charge the battery, or, you know, get there and start taking pictures only to find out that Nik doesn’t want to cooperate that day, and I will be screwed…surrounded by other people who probably already know what they are doing more than I do!  So…HELP!  Any tips?  Anyone whos shot a wedding before??  I have the lists of things to get etc, I mean the technical stuff is what I need help with.  Whats the best settings to shoot in?  What should my priority be?  If its dim lighting is a flash (external even) a bad idea??  I plan to practice with her before the actual wedding, but still…its nerve racking!

Secondly – I was just BLOWN AWAY today with a new idea.  I know just about every photographer out there LOVES them some bokeh.  Am I right?  Something about seeing the fuzzy little dots appear is just exciting, just me?  Well, a few days (?) ago I was stalking one of my favorite bloggers when I read this post – and I fell in love.  Not with the blogger (I already loved her and her blog).  Seriously, did you know they even MADE bokeh shapes??  I know, that’s not the technical term, but I like it.  I turned multiple shades of green and drooled some, then added it to my favorites the link and tried to forget about it.

Then today – this post – appeared – and I about shrieked.  Ok. I DID shriek.  At the same time my sister did – because she found the PERFECT dress (or whatever) and she thought I was excited for her, and I thought she was excited for me, so it got a little loud in here.  But that’s beside the point…

IT’S A DO IT YOURSELF BOKEH SHAPE MAKER!!!

Ok Ok Ok.

Im sorry.

Really, Im not.  But I will say I am.

So I set to work.  “Give me BLACK PAPER!!” and “I NEED THIS DRESS!” were just some of the things yelled this afternoon.  I cut, and taped, and threw some paper – because it wasn’t WORKING and finally…after a little bit more research, I got it to work.  Que more squealing, and then I hauled Amanda over and had her stick her head in front of the lights and attempted to “Bokeh” the background and that didn’t work so well.

But the point is…

You can make these!  And atleast try them out to see if you like it!  Or if your like me, and are being a tight wad but want to be like the big kids, you can make your own knock of version, I wont tell.  Promise!

So there are my bits for tonight.

Really.  Go check out those links.  They are awesome!

And if you can spare…A little advice please?

Now on to the pictures:

My first cut out attempt just confused me, if was only making the PICTURE heart shaped…

So I did a little more searching, and discovered that if you put the paper on the lens (as apposed to the lens hood) it does much better…

Little hearts!  Ok, so maybe I need to work on my shape a little, this was my first try!

Attempted stars too…look more like boats!!

Or little pacmans!!

This was probably one of our better ideas this year.

And so far, its turned out to be a rather…Picture Perfect idea…no pun intended!

I feel almost obligated to pass on this information, having spent a good day talking, researching, and weighing out the options for Amanda & Davids wedding announcement picture, trying to score the best deal, for quality photos.

For Christmas cards:

We went with Snapfish. I almost went with Shutterfly – they had a great “Black Friday” deal, but I got scared, and the timer was more than I could handle 🙂

I will say, I was skeptical at best, and worried.  I have never had good luck getting pictures printed (lets not get into the Kiosk Machine Troubles of ‘08).  What if I ordered them, and they were pixilated?  What if there was a mistake and someone had a dirty spot right under their nose?  What if we didn’t like it?  There was no way to “Proof” before ordering, and after a late night freak out on my part, we made the plunge.  We ended up with 120 (with envelopes) greeting cards, 5x 7 for $70.

They arrived today and to say we were pleased would be an understatement!  The quality couldn’t be better!!  The only problem is now we feel obligated to address all 120 of the envelopes.

Score!!

For the wedding invitations – we decided our best bet would be to go through Walmart.com – mainly because we were going to be placing a mass order and didn’t want to have to pay for something that wasn’t what we wanted.  We decided to order one picture, and pick it up later that night.  After verifying that was infact, what we wanted, and that the quality was par we placed our order.  We went about things a little differently, instead of placing one mass order for all 125 pictures, we split the order into 3, keeping the amount under 425 so we didn’t have to pay with a credit card.

And it worked!!

We were impressed!

For gifts – were taking a much lighter approach.  We decided to get some prints made at Walmart and send them to our grandpa and uncle, along with some baked goods.  Both of whom, spend the holidays alone.

We got together a group of pictures we liked, uploaded and sent them off.  We were shocked when we picked the order up and discovered that the price was $35!!  The original order had said it would be $15 for 81 photos.  After looking the photo lady said that they had charged us for “Greeting cards” instead of regular photos.

For $20 (15 for pictures, 5 for an album) we were able to put together a cute collection of pictures for our grandpa.

I didnt get pictures of this, and we mailed it off today, but the quality of the pictures were great.

Tips – We found it to be cheaper to order pictures off of Walmart.com vs. going in and printing them off the machines.  It was faster, and much more stress free!!

Wallet sizes – this is confusing!  After talking and researching I finally was able to figure out that wallet sized photos are put on a 4×6 photo – two to a page.  If you specify that you do NOT want them cut, it was ½ price – here atleast!

Uploading – Upload pictures as their original size, and do the cropping on the photo site.  We found this to save from the pictures getting all pixilated – atleast that’s what we THINK happened.  We usually crop the picture to how we want, and upload, and get poor quality.  But this year was a pleasant surprise!

Use the coupons – I am always skeptical about coupons, especially online, the ones that say “Use this and get free shipping at check out” but guess what?  They really work!  We scored free shipping!!

And last but not least – dont stress!  Remember the real reason of Christmas and dont get caught up in everything if it stresses you out.

The distortion in any of the pictures is thanks to my camera!
