With coffee in one hand, and the other hand empty – I look over the balcony. The smell of the sea air, mingled with sunscreen. It happens to be one of my most favorite smells in the world. It brings back memories. So many memories. Carefree happy days spent on the beach. A time in my life that I didn’t have a worry in the world. Its not that things were much different then, its just that my mind was too small to comprehend just what was going on. All I knew was that a day at the beach – was a day at the beach.

The sun shines hot, the sky blue, the sea green. Its just the way it is here. At least, for the moment. And for the moment – life is ok.

It’s not always this way. It’s not always calm, and relaxed. Free and worry-less. In fact, it rarely is. But for this moment, this frozen instant in time – everything is alright in my world, and I’m free to think of nothing. Much like those carefree lazy days on the beach as a child, my mind doesn’t comprehend anything other than what is circling in my immediate world, which at the moment, happens to be alright.

I’m relaxed. Something I haven’t been in months. Ive tried, to relax, that is. And for a few moments, maybe a few hours at a time – I am. But the worry always comes back. The fear of forgetting, hurting, loosing, leaving. The fear of betrayal, the what ifs, the how to’s, and maybe nots. It all gets to be so much sometimes. The worry of routine, of work, of life in general.

I have always heard people talk about taking time away to do absolutely nothing – but to me, that has always seemed painful. For once in my life, perhaps for the first time, I have not worried about the night at hand. I haven’t fought out the dinner plans, or forced my way through schedules. I don’t even know what I dare to do tomorrow. Even the rain seems calming here.

Maybe part of me left the worry behind. Maybe its just the country. The way the people live here. The way the sea washes in. It’s the way of life that so many people crave, yet few find. The suntanned backs, burned faces, white beaches, green oceans, rocky cliffs, and breathtaking views.

For once, I don’t worry, and it’s dare I say, freeing.

I just hope its something I can hold onto…

Forever.

Yesterday we booked a boat tour to go see the rocks and caves from the water side.  We dont normally book tours when we travel places but for some reason we all decided (randomly) that this would be worth it.  And we werent disappointed!  It was a one hour tour, in and out of different caves – and was really decently priced as well.

Of course, any day that starts off with ice cream is bound to be a good day!

All buckled in ready to go!

We saw the beaches we were on yesterday – from the opposite side.  It was pretty neat.

Captain Judah!  We then circled around and raced back into town.  Was a great time on the water.

We spent the next bit of time exploring the town.

Judah’s great nanny has been to Portugal before – and she bought a similar dancing donkey when she was here.  Amanda and Judah were pretty excited to see them for sale again .

Someone was tuckered out from all the fun and excitement of the day and fell asleep on the way home.  Once we got back some of us napped – and others jumped in the pool to cool off.  Was another fun day.

A mishmash of a day.  We went back to the original beach we started at and went swimming.  The water always seems so taunting, just sitting there.  Amanda loves to jump in any random bodies of water there are (pools, oceans, etc.).  Its just one of those things we do when traveling to new places – jump into the water.  The waves kept crashing into the beach, and made it fun to “ride” them into the sand.

Of course, no trip to the beach is complete without chocolate.

Or flowers.  DSC_0781

And finally, the jury is still out on this one: A sail boat or yacht?  Amanda and I say it has all the things needed to make it a sail boat: Mainly, a sail.  Everyone else seems to think these are fancy yachts.  What do you say?

Today was, probably one of the more beautiful days here.  Day 4 usually is.  You kind of have your bearings, you know where things are, and you kind of know what to expect more or less.  We rode our bikes down to the beach today.  A beautiful, beautiful beach.  We got sun.  Lots and lots of sun.  Lots of sand, water, caves, and other neat things to explore.  And then we rode home.  And passed out.  Because sun.  So much sun.  So many of us arent used to quite so much sun!  But we will take it.

Amanda and I went to explore a different section of the beach, and when we returned – Mom and mum were laying face down in the sand, in the hot, hot sun.  Of course Amanda and I panicked saying they were going to get burnt, but Judah was worried as well.  He assumed BOTH of his nanny’s had fallen into the sand and couldnt get up.  He ran over and helped them both up, of course.

Now for the pictures.

We ordered bikes today too.  Rental bikes, that is.  After a quick lunch we headed out for a short ride.  A short ride that ended up being about 10 miles.

We saw wild orange trees.

So naturally – we had to stop and pick some.

And then it rained.  At first it was just a few drops, and we joked around about it “Raining” but then it started coming hard, and fast and we were all pretty much soaked by the time we got back.
